Workers of the EU unite! (except with Germany?)

Did anyone notice that Germany proposes to delay accepting Polish workers? Germany as part of “Old Europe” opted out of entertaining the hard working, and cheaper,  Poles when Poland joined the EU, Now Germany wants to postpone the 5 year period for another 2 years! Oh brotherly love!

Germany, the largest economy in the EU, is not planning to open its labor market to Poles as of May 1 as previously anticipated.

Poland will have to wait two more years – until the middle of 2011 – as German Chancellor Angela Merkel fears the economic crisis. In line with the accession treaty, each of the ‘old’ EU countries could keep the ban on employment for new member states for five years since expanding the EU.

Why do they (means the Germans) do so? I remember times when Ukrainians started to migrate to Poland in “quest” for work. This only brought benefits for our (means Polish) workers as they finally faced competition and started to work more effectively. For me, personally, competition in any shape: worker to worker or company to company is just another signal to improve the quality of my work, look for more effective, low-cost solutions, of course all this for the benefit of the final client.
Alex, I have just started reading your articles and I have to say I want more!!! Thanks again for the time we worked together in Poland.
